Aqualand Marina Commemorates History on Lake Lanier

Aqualand Marina has made history as the world’s largest inland marina, but is mostly recognized for more historical events. The marina is situated on Lake Lanier, a manmade reservoir created by the construction of the Buford Dam, which was completed in 1956. The dam harnesses the waters of two rivers- the Chattahoochee and the Chestatee, which both start in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Power generation and recreational activity both began on June 15, 1957, making it a historical U.S. landmark.

Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950’s, Lake Lanier is a multi-purpose lake that provides for flood protection, power production, water supply, navigation and recreation. The lake is a 39,000-acre reservoir with over 692 miles of shoreline. It has made history as the birthplace of power generation. The total cost of construction was $45,000,000. When the reservoir reaches full pool, its elevation is 1071 feet above sea level, making it an ideal location for marinas.

In 2006, over 8 million people visited Lake Lanier. In 2007, marinas on the Lake, including Aqualand, celebrated its 50th anniversary with various special events to commemorate the marina’s history. Some of these events include: a photo contest, a 5K run, in-water boat show, boating seminars, etc.

Aqualand Marina has some of the best recreational amenities that a marina can offer, proving it is just as much a recreational resort area for vacationers as it is for avid boaters. It is a historical landmark as well, making it a great place to visit with the family. Some such amenities are: The Dockside Grill Restaurant, picnic area with playscape, public and member only picnic facilities, houseboat, boat, and personal watercraft rentals, and a ships store.
